You be the librarian

I need something to read.  My hot streak of good books is sputtering and dying.

Be a dear, won't you, and leave me a book recommendation in the comments section?  I'm up for just about anything--Nancy Pearl says we must strive to read outside of our comfort zone, so give me your best shot.

  1. Well, you and I have similar tastes, and you're on my GoodReads, so I guess I'll be looking through the recommendations you get for myself, too. If you're looking for something different AND for grown-ups, check out The Boy Detective Fails by Joe Meno.

  2. Read a grown up book. Read Paradise by A.L.Kennedy. It's up in my favorites. Brutal story beautifully written. Also have you read Kafka on the Shore by Murikami?

  3. If you're like me and avoid sci fi/fantasy, then I have some sci-fi/fantasy recommendations for you. China Mieville's The City & The City (part mystery, part fantasy, plus a whole lot of weird and awesome). The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Everyone loves this book. Because it is great. And tragic. And if you do love it, there is a sequel. Or John Wyndham's The Chrysalids. More literary sci-fi of the bleak post-apocalyptic variety, which I hear all the kids are reading these days.

  4. Here's a J/YA book I want someone else to read to let me know if it's as good as I remember--Up On Cloud Nine by Anne Fine. Warning--It has a lameish cover, which has scared people away from it, I think.
The House of Tomorrow by Peter Bognanni was a fun, quirky coming-of-age.
One of favorite books last year that's also about mothering is called The Hand that First Held Mine by Maggie O'Farrell.
Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel is beautiful and a little strange.
Um, um...One Day by Nicholls for something pop-culture-laden and kinda light. (Read it before the movie comes out!)
