I think there's also the issue that Katniss is described as having olive skin and dark hair--in other words, Mediterranean, an ethnic region that doesn't feature a lot of blonds. You'd think they'd have been at least slightly mindful of that sort of thing, given the kerfuffle over the whitewashing of the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, but, eh.
Yeah, you're right, that does seem kind of racist. I didn't remember that whole bit about Katniss' region being one of dark-skinned people, which I guess goes to show what a careful reader I am.
I saw Winter's Bone and unlike everyone else, I thought she was pretty terrible. Really wooden. Not steely. Hmm, that could work for Katnis actually.
ReplyDeleteHmm. I didn't see True Grit, either, but that girl seemed cooler somehow.
ReplyDeleteI loved Winter's Bone! And I thought she was fantastic in it. The girl from True Grit is too young. My two cents.....
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I guess there is a hubbub because she has blond hair and Katniss does not. But there's always the hair dye.
